World Breastfeeding Week
The
Innocenti Declaration was produced and adopted by participants
at the WHO/UNICEF policymakers' meeting on "Breastfeeding
in the 1990s: A Global Initiative"co-sponsored by
the United States Agency for International Development
(AID) and the Swedish International Development Authority
(SIDA), held at the Spedale degli Innocenti, Florence,
Italy, from July 30 to August 1, 1990. More information
can be found at the Innocenti
Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of
Breastfeeding.
World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) created
World Breastfeeding Week and selected August 1-7 because
the Innocenti Declaration came out in August of 1990.
World Breastfeeding Week is an international outreach
effort, celebrated in 120 countries, to promote and educate
about breastfeeding. Each year there is a different theme
celebrated during World Breastfeeding Week. The 2010 theme
is Breastfeeding: Just 10 Steps! The Baby Friendly Way.
For more information about WBW 2010, see World
Breastfeeding Week Home Page.
In eastern Pennsylvania, PRO-LC sponsors a contest among
facilities with maternity services (hospitals, clinics, birth centers). PRO-LC recognizes
facilities with the most innovative display promoting breastfeeding
during World Breastfeeding Week. For more information about the 2010 content, click on the 2010 WBW Contest Flyer.
A representative from each county rates the displays,
and Grand Prize, First, Second, and Third Prize winners are selected and prizes awarded.
Every facility that participates receives a certificate recognizing their participation in the contest, and some breastfeeding tools or materials.
